Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions that we receive.

  • Can water detection systems detect other liquids?

Yes. There are a number of different sensors which can be used to detect the presence of Hydrocarbons (Oil, Fuels), Acids and Aqueous chemicals.

    Is leak detection expensive?

This all depends on the size and complexity of the system required, small simple systems can cost less than a £1000, however the larger the system and the more zones added will increase the price, but bare in mind this has to be offset against possible losses that would be incurred from an undetected water leak.

If you would like to learn more send us a message via our contact page and we can go over your requirements with you.

    Do you charge for quotations?

No we don’t. The majority of our costings can be derived from the information you provide and even if we need to carry out a site survey we do not normally charge unless the site is in the London ULEZ zone where we unfortunately have to apply a small charge which we will refund if we are awarded the contract.

  • Can I install a water detection system myself?

This very much depends on your capabilities and the application that the leak detection is being applied to. Small simple systems can normally be installed with success by a competent DIYer, assuming they have basic electrical knowledge. However we would always recommend that the installation and design be carried out by an industry professional.

Can leak detection systems be integrated into other systems?

Yes they can. Most systems come with volt free relay contacts for basic interfacing with monitoring systems. Other systems are available that have other ways of interfacing such as RS-232, RS-485, Modbus, JBUS, 4-20mA current transmitters and so on. It is not uncommon for water detection systems to be connected to Intruder alarms as technical alarms, Fire panels as monitored equipment and Building Management Systems (BMS).

  • Do leak detection systems need maintenance?

Yes they do. All manufacturers state that systems should be checked regularly. Water, Chemical, Hydrocarbon and Solvent detection systems should be serviced once every three or six months as site conditions dictate and only by a trained service company.

Can I service leak detection systems myself?

No you can’t. They should only be serviced by trained personnel, who have a thorough knowledge of how they work and can carry out diagnostic tests and procedures to confirm that the system is functioning correctly, this is particularly important if the water detection system is an insurance requirement.

I have a Raychem TraceTek system displaying Service Required, should I ignore this?

No, the system is reporting that it isn’t able to function correctly and needs attention. Many users think that this is purely a service timer and can be ignored, however the cause of the Service Required message should be investigated as soon as possible to prevent any interruption to the cover.

Can you maintain systems that you haven’t installed?

Yes we can, we have working relationships with all the major leak detection manufacturers allowing us to source spare parts and information on both past and present systems. You can find more information on our Maintenance page.

  • Can I buy just the equipment from you?

Yes you can, we can supply entire systems or just a single component.
